Dunstable Downs, Chilterns Gateway Centre and Whipsnade Estate
Open today from 1000 until 0400
This is a great National Trust site to take the family of all ages, dogs are welcome (under close control due to wildlife). It is open all year, 7 days a week. Car parking is available on site at a charge of £2 or free to NT members (just make sure you scan your card for a ticket to display at the machines, these are quite new and a ticket is now required regardless of the NT car sticker).
The Visitor Centre run by the National Trust has a cafe, shop and information on what to see and what to do at the Downs, there are activity packs and planned activities throughout the holidays and weekends. You can purchase kites on site if you haven't brought your own with you or just sit back and watch other kite flyers, there are usually a few down there whenever we have been. We take a small box kite with us to have a little fun.
You can watch the gliders taking off from the London Gliding Club at the foot of the Downs or venture over to Chute Wood which is great for exploring, den building and there's a playground in there too (remember your wellies if it's been a bit wet outside). There are a number of walking routes to follow from the Downs or we just usually enjoy a stroll along the Downs staying close to the Cafe. It can get rather windy so dress appropriately.
Food is reasonable and what you'd expect from a NT site (jacket potatoes, sausage rolls, homemade soup, hotpot of the day).
The Downs are open from dawn to dusk, the Centre is open from 9.30 each day but closing times change dependent on season so it's worth checking the website for more information.
