Formby Beach

Formby Beach

Open today from ined until ined

This month we managed to get ourselves organised and start our National Trust membership! I've been saying that we'll join for over a year now and never got around to it. So our first place to review HAD to be a National Trust place. We travelled to Formby Beach in Merseyside, only an hours drive from Manchester. It wasn't too busy when we arrived but I've heard that the car park, although quite large, fills up quickly at peak times so get there early if you plan to visit! Parking is right next to the beach (meaning you don't have to lug heavy windbreaks and chairs too far) but we headed straight back up into the woods first. Formby has a variety of different walks you can take around the area, so if you have visited before there is more than likely still lots more to see. My littlest was set on seeing the red squirrels that Formby is home to, so we opted for the squirrel walk first. After only a few minutes of walking we spotted our first squirrel. Then another...and a third! I was doubtful that we would even see any but they were there in abundance, and didn't shy away from visitors. We carried on to the beach where we spent a good hour splashing and searching for shells (my two HAVE to bring back something foraged from any trip, often resulting in me finding a lovely surprise in my coat pockets when I am at work 🙄) and then looped back through the woods to the ice cream van at the car park for the obligatory seaside ice cream. There isn't a cafe at Formby- but a snack van which serves hot snacks and drinks at peak periods and just cakes and treats off peak. There are also a number of picnic areas and places to sit. The National Trust van is situated opposite the snack van and had lots of information about the different events and activities going on at Formby- lots going on for the family, including the "50 things to do before you're 11 and 3/4" challenges. Visitors were also able to purchase buckets and spades for the beach from here. Formby is very family friendly- the paths were well signposted and easily accessible for prams and wobbly toddlers and the toilets had baby changing facilities. These were near a short stay park up so you could nip in without having to walk all the way from the car park on the beach. We spent a full day at Formby- the woodland and beach make it seem like two completely different areas, breaking the day up and providing lots to see and do. The walking and seaside air were even enough to shatter my two out- both were asleep ten minutes into the journey back and a quiet car ride home is always a bonus!
